Winter Time Respiratory Health

An article in “Atmospheric Environment”: microbes and allergens that normally float in moist air will settle and stick to the moisture of our skin and sinuses when the air is dry. This, in turn, increases the risk of infection and asthma.

The article goes on to describe several high tech and expensive ionization systems. In the end, the simple solution is to have a humidifier. My rule of thumb is this: If the heat is on, put on the humidifier.

There is quite a range of options here.  While I love my fancy ultrasonic machine, with a bit of maintenance, a simple vaporizer does the trick. Recently, I even found an excellent low maintenance, anti-bacterial, ultrasonic humidifier at Walgreen’s Drug Store for under $45.

Relief from Cat Allergies Improves Relationship!

Joe Tanis wrote a recommendation for Union Square Spinal Care:
“I am doing Lenny’s allergy treatment. I have been suffering from serious allergies for years, especially to cats. Friday I did the treatment for cats and Saturday I went to my girlfriends house and slept calmly for the first time with no problems. Usually I feel like someone is jamming a hose into my lungs and constantly filling them with sludge because of her cat. I am truly amazed. Phaedra and I both thank you as I have been miserable and she has been miserable watching me suffer. If you have allergies that rule your life talk to Lenny.”

Calcium Should Not Be Kept Lonely

My cousin recently reported about her visit to a modern medical doctor, she was told to start taking more calcium. When I asked how the consulting doctor knew this, she said it was a general guideline for women in their thirties.
There is constant drumbeat in our media; if we don’t get more calcium, our bones will collapse like a house of cards. So all kinds of calcium supplements get pushed upon us, from additives in cereals to Tums. There are so many things wrong with this scenario. I will start with one.
Balanced Minerals- As intended by nature, calcium never shows up alone in any living food source, i.e. plant or animal. Moreover, bones are like structural concrete; a complex combination of materials that need to be proportionately combined to achieve full strength. Simplistically increasing only one thing, calcium, creates an imbalance that can backfire most cruelly.
A recent study on expectant/ lactating mothers found that supplementing only calcium over a 12 month period actually led to significant bone loss, as compared to the placebo group with out any calcium added. (Jarjou LMA et al. “Effect of calcium supplementation in pregnancy on maternal bone outcomes in women with a low calcium intake.” Am J Clin Nutr. 2010:92 450-457) This study, cited by Dr. Alan R. Gaby in the Townsend Letter for Doctors, July 2011:37-38. He goes on to comment that only increasing calcium, “interferes with the absorption of magnesium, manganese, zinc, phosphorus, and silicon, each of which plays a role in maintaining bone health”. Again it’s like trying to make concrete by only supplying sand, without the right proportions of cement, water, pebbles, etc. you don’t get structural integrity. Worse yet, the body will actually pull apart bone mass to restore the deficient minerals to the bloodstream. That’s because bone is used as storage of these minerals for times of need; even if it is artificially induced by short sighted nutritional advice.
So when I saw my cousin at my chiropractic practice, I recommended a balanced mineral supplement.
Best foods are goat milk products (more similar to human milk than cow milk). Also, consider leafy greens, after all, where did the cows and goats get the minerals for their milk? One of my favorite mineral sources are the seaweeds, additionally rich in chromium, a mineral now lacking in the soil.

The Real Work Begins After The Crisis

Hello my friends. I’m writing to check in with you on the state of your well being.

As you know, I help remove and resolve spinal distress – allowing you to feel fully present and experience the awe of living.

While most new patients enter my care because the house of their being is on fire, many discontinue care abruptly once their suffering has dipped just below bearable. The real work is the restoration. Same as in a home.

By dropping out before the real restoration work can begin, they fail to experience the full value of my value.

Waiting for crisis isn’t a long term strategy. Just look at the way our country is run.

Please notice the subtle warning signs in your body –

  • A tendency to slump, especially in the shoulders
  • A need to fold your arms in front of you while standing
  • Your head is chronically forward of your shoulders
  • Sitting becomes painful, even within a half an hour

If you have put this off until you have the money, time, need, etc… please call me, and I will work with you  – especially during these slower summer months. Let this be a summer you remember investing in yourself long term than hoping against hope for a change outside of yourself.

Don’t wait for another four alarm fire in your body.
-Dr. Lenny

Zinc and B12 are an important team for your mental and emotional well being.

In “The Townsend Letter of Doctors “, I was reading about all the B12 health benefits: everything from fighting anemia to memory and mood elevation. While I don’t practice psychiatry, the function of the central nervous system is key in my practice.

One study caught my eye. This one, (Mitsuyama et al) brought up the issue of how important zinc is in getting the B12 across the blood-brain barrier and into the central nervous system. No matter how good your B12 status, if Zinc isn’t available the vitamin won’t arrive where it’s needed. Without B12, the brain is vulnerable to a host of mental and functional difficulties.

Various obstacles exist to Zinc’s availability: mercury, cadmium and copper. How do we know if you have adequate Zinc? I have a simple, cheap and direct test at my Union Square Spinal Care office. A weak solution of Zinc is given to patients to swirl around in the mouth. I time how long it takes for any taste to develop. The more deficient a person, the longer it takes to notice.

Zinc supplements are cheap and effective. Who is most likely to develop Zinc deficiency? People exposed to cadmium, lead and copper like mechanics, plumbers, electronics technicians and those in the dental industry. Cigarette or marijuana smokers are exposed to cadmium and should also be checked regularly.

So before resorting to powerful medications consider increasing B12 and evaluating Zinc availability.

Ignore Your Health, It’ll Go Away

I was walking in the West Village last weekend, when the sight of this ice encrusted car caught my attention. I had to take the photograph you see above. As you can see the vehicle in the background is free and clear. The past weeks of snow, freezing rain, partial thaw then re-freezing created this miserable condition. Yet it is the result of doing nothing that made the difference between the two vehicles.
I constantly urge my patients to keep the small problems small. Stay of aware of your body, and take action early. Get the exercise, the massage, of course see me; before you have to take drastic action and see a surgeon! The owner of the car may have to wait for the Spring thaw, the owner of our bodies (that’s us) don’t get that luxury.

Self Assessment, an important starting place

“Know Thyself” is credited to Socrates. In ‘The Art of War,’ Sun Tzu wrote: “If you know the enemy and know yourself, you need not fear the result of a hundred battles.” And, John Lennon; “How can I move forward when I don’t know which way I’m facing?”

Living in the information age, what tools do we have to assess ourselves? Tests should be simple, inexpensive, and accurate. Equally important, they must point to solutions that allow us to determine choices.

-What small changes will greatly improve your condition (ex: quit smoking)?
-What large change will be worthwhile (ex: you may really need a surgery)?

I am currently reviewing several symptom survey forms that “cast a broad net” over a great variety of health issues.

Importance of Iodine and Iron to Child Health Recognized in EU

Positive European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) health claims linking iodine, iron and child development have been adopted and written into the EU legislature.

Commission Regulation (EU) No 958/2010 of 22 October 2010 refusing to authorize a health claim made on foods, other than those referring to the reduction of disease risk and to child development and health relevance.

The new claims state:

* Iodine contributes to the normal growth of children
* Iron contributes to normal cognitive development of children

Let’s start with the IODINE:

In my office, Union Square Spinal Care, I often test for adequate Iodine with a simple test you can do at home. Take regular Iodine tincture (2%), and paint a one inch square on the skin, where it won’t rub against skin or clothing. Observe how long this takes to absorb. I you can still see it after 24 hours, then your nutritional status is good. Of course the faster it is absorbed, the greater the body’s need.

My secretary recently did this test, and to our amazement the Iodine coloration was gone in fifteen minutes!

Another patient of mine started a daily supplement as a result of this test; she dropped nine pounds of fat in just a couple of months without any other dietary changes or exercise.

I have been very impressed with the Iodoral brand formula that is a combination of Iodine and Iodide. Do a quick “Google” search, and you will see the expert agreement here. What isn’t being brought to light is the simplicity of iodine deficiency testing, that I just described.

Magnesium, an Ally in Need of Defending

There is a call for us to intervene with the FDA and US Attorney General to change standards and regulations on Magnesium in our drinking water. Historically, Magnesium was in salt, today’s table salt is really “industrial waste”. With artificially low standards set by our government we have lost another resource for this vital mineral.

I had done hundreds of hair mineral analysis tests, and never found anyone with sufficient Mg to balance the other minerals. Don’t overlook the fundamentals of good health.

Bio Allergenix Testimonial

“My name is A.C. and I did the Bio Allergenix allergy treatment at Dr. Leonard Rosenblum’s office in May 2009. It has now been a year since I completed the treatment and I am still blissfully allergy free. Usually during this time of year I would be inside, with the windows closed and my air purifier working around the clock just to get some relief from my severe allergies.

But now, thanks to Dr. Lenny and Bio Allergenix, I am able to walk freely outdoors and not be affected by sneezing, itchy eyes, and an itchy throat; this is unheard of for me for at least 20 years. I now notice all the people around me complaining about their allergies, and I am so thankful that I no longer have to be a part of that conversation. I even forgot I ever had any allergies!”

Flu Shot Worthless?

Late last year HFA published a study from the Mayo Clinic showing how flu shots in children actually increased the likelihood of hospitalization. Now a new study is stating that flu shots in the elderly mostly likely have no health benefits at all.

There is no evidence to support the contention that the influenza vaccine administered to the over 65s is of any more use than opening the windows and washing hands, a new study from the Cochrane Collaboration claims.

“Our analysis is compiled using millions of data from 40 seasons worldwide. What we have seen is that the influenza vaccine can at best have a very small effect,” said Thomas Jefferson, one of the authors of the report.

Bisphenol A becomes test of leadership for FDA

Here at Union Square Spinal Care, I watch over the watch dogs….sometimes scratching my head in wonder. That’s why I have so little hair! Here is a recent story that needs attention. More and more the FDA slips into being a puppet of the drug and food industries.

By Rory Harrington, 14-Dec-2009

Related topics: Regulation

Each day the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) dithers in delivering its verdict on the safety of bisphenol A (BPA), its authority is diminished and its credibility wanes.

The hold-up is eroding its ability to lead by failing to give industry and consumers what they are crying out for – a timely, impartial and science-based guide to what is safe and what is not.

But why is it so significant that the FDA decision, promised for 30 November, has yet to be published? After all, it’s only two weeks late. Does it matter?

Yes, it does. BPA has become a litmus test of the FDA’s leadership.

When Dr Margaret Hamburg swept into the agency in May she looked and sounded every inch the ferocious new broom determined to turn the organisation around. After declaring the FDA had failed in its handling of the nationwide outbreak of salmonella caused by contaminated peanuts, observers were further heartened when she trained her laser sights on bisphenol A, the chemical used in polycarbonate baby bottles and food can linings that has been linked to cancer, diabetes and heart problems.

As rock group The Who would say ‘Meet the new boss’. And unlike the veteran singers’ next line, ‘Same as the old boss’, Hamburg and the organisation she headed suddenly seemed very different.

The straight-talking Commissioner vowed to sort out the thorny question of BPA in weeks not months – garnering almost universal praise that here at last was somebody who not only understood the importance of the issue but was prepared to bang some heads together to solve the problem. It was a bold declaration designed to challenge the perception of a food safety body too readily influenced by the industries it was charged with regulating.

And in a world where perception can be reality, it could also explain why BPA has so far failed to trigger the same level of anxiety in Europe. The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) certainly has its critics but few would dispute the organisation is impartial and not afraid to ruffle industry feathers if that is where the evidence leads. While the FDA has wrestled with its lack of credibility, EFSA has been able to calmly assert that it sees no need to review its stance on BPA. It has provided a clear and consistent position that inspires consumer confidence and stability for industry.

The FDA move was also supposed to assuage the genuine fears of US consumers desperate to know they weren’t inadvertently harming themselves or their families. It was to offer much-need clarity to allow industry to formulate longer-term packaging strategies. This enthusiasm was barely dented when the agency announced more than few weeks later its verdict would not be forthcoming until after Thanksgiving.

Chiropractic Care and Oxidative Stress

Chiropractic has received much recognition in treating low back pain. Much chiropractic research has been published showing evidence that treatment of low-back pain using chiropractic adjustments is safer, effective, and less expensive than the traditional allopathic medical treatments. Also, chiropractors receive extensive training during their course of study in the area of muskuloskeletal management. It has come to the forefront that there is new evidence showing that chiropractic goes beyond the treatment of low-back pain.

According to Mercola.com, current research is now pointing to the fact that chiropractic adjustments affect the chemistry of biological processess at the cellular level. What this simply translates to is that chiropractic care could positively effect the the body’s chemistry by reducing the levels of oxidative stress and promote DNA repair.

What is oxidative stress? Is cellular stress that leads to oxidate damage that has been implicated to lead to certain diseases such as cancer and Alzheimer’s. Oxidative stress is also recognized as having an impact on the body’s aging process. Oxidative stress within the body happens naturally due to the body’s own metabolic waste, producing free radicals. However, sources outside the body that include exposure to cigarette smoke and other environmental toxins lead to an added amount of free radical formation in the body that when out of balance can lead to disease and inflammatory reactions

A Secretary’s Diary On The Job

Hi. My name is Mela and I have been working in Dr. Lenny’s office on Thursdays for about two months now. I have really enjoyed my job, I get to meet interesting people, schedule appointments, take phone calls and call insurance companies. Most of the time the insurance companies are up to something shady, or something unbeknownst to me that I have to figure out during the course of a 20 to 30 minute conversation that could have taken five to ten if they didn’t all have their heads you know where.

I have gotten to know most of the regular patients amicably, at least I would like to think so, I don’t know if I have met them all, but I used to come in on Tuesdays so that may be so. All of the patients love Dr. Lenny very much and it makes me smile to see them so satisfied. This Doctor’s office is in no way like some of the other ones that I have been to in my short lifetime where after you pay the bill you never feel good about it.

Today was an adventure getting to the office; the building is doing some heavy duty maintenance in the lobby so I had to take the freight elevator up. It took FOREVER because the freight elevator does not like to close its doors in a timely fashion and then it went down to the basement, and up to the lobby, then down to the basement again, then it stopped at the second floor for no apparent reason. Very frustrating. So the elevator was malfunctioning and I got to work about fifteen minutes late. Dr. Lenny didn’t seem too put off by this, in fact he even offered up the freight elevator as an excuse for my tardiness, which I gladly accepted. I think I squashed any residual resentment Dr. Lenny might have for me for showing up late by gifting him with a nice, big, juicy apple that I picked while apple picking a couple of days ago.

The phone has been steadily ringing today which I take as a good sign. See, right after I wrote that sentence the phone rang, and now the door bells are ringing to indicate that a patient is here for his or her appointment. The patient that came in is named Austin and I just asked his permission to put his name in this post. He’s an actor, he comes in regularly and reads very big books and wears spiffy blazers.

There is a lot of political banter that goes on in this office, but I don’t think that’s strange for any setting where people gather, people get fired up about things. Politics is a good thing to get fired up about. I think so anyway, because I think it makes one’s heart rate go up, therefore it could be considered part of one’s daily exercise.

Speaking of exercise, I started working out with a personal trainer friend of mine recently and I just finished my fifth session. I am very happy to also be a patient of Dr. Lenny because having him adjust me allows me to be more aligned in my workouts. That makes me very happy. It really does make a huge difference. I am able to get a better workout and my body has a faster recovery time, as well as the fact that my hips do not make funny noises anymore. Which is a really good thing, considering during my initial consultation, Dr. Lenny told me that my hip was tipped. So I think that the no more funny noises thing is a sign that my hips are aligning. And that puts a huge smile on my face.

H1N1 Vaccine? Think Again!

Courtesy of Bob Chapman of The International Forecaster
Subject: Vital data about US Navy results of swine flu vaccine on ship

Data gleaned indirectly from anonymous testimony of Navy wives of the affected crew via the internet radio show A Marine Disquisition http://www.clipser.com/watch_video/1362067 :

1. Unnamed US Navy vessel put to sea in April with 347 man crew.

2. Entire crew was vaccinated with H1N1 Swine Flu vaccine shortly after they put to sea.

3. Crew sickened so severely that other ships had to respond to render aid. 16 Medical Dr.s put aboard from an unnamed aircraft carrier and other responding vessels. Total of 50 Navy personnel sent aboard to respond to crisis.

4. Two of the crew of 347 died – including the Captain of the ship (a Lieutenant Commander) and a Chief Petty Officer.

5. 50 personnel sent aboard to help are quarantined in Navy hospital in Balboa, Spain after 10 of them caught the flu from the ship’s crew. Two of the 50 quarantined are in serious condition at last report.

6. Of the 347 man crew that were vaccinated, 333 contracted the H1N1 flu FROM THE VACCINE. Two died, as mentioned above, and 331 survived. Only 14 of the 347 vaccinated sailors did not show any ill effects from the vaccine.

7. Navy has threatened all the spouses of the ship’s crew to remain silent – claiming all this information is classified. Some are whistle-blowing and that is where this information is coming from.

8. On the unnamed aircraft carrier that provided assistance, 415 sailors contracted the swine flu and are currently quarantined onboard.
PLEASE pass this email along. The truth is that the swine flu epidemic will be created BY THE VACCINE. If we don’t take it, there will be no epidemic. >From this one test it’s apparent that the vaccine as tested on that ship’s crew in April is 96% effective at infecting the recipient with swine flu. Such an infection rate is impossible to achieve by any natural means. Though it only killed 1% immediately, there is no telling what the long term effects on those injected with the vaccine will be. See the research on the long term effects of the 1976 swine flu vaccine, and the Gulf War anthrax vaccine programs for more information.
Also note that mere contact with those that have been vaccinated creates a 20% chance of you contracting the swine flu even if you have not been vaccinated.

Please pass this data along to anyone you care about!

>The Iodine Test

>This week I will follow up on last week’s analysis of thyroid activity.
If you had a low thyroid condition, the first, easiest, and most common cause is inadequate iodine availabilty. Though we depend on iodine supplemented table salt, the current usage of chlorides and flourides in our water supply work against us. That’s because these are so much more reactive than poor little iodine, that they prevent proper activation of thyroxin (T3).
So now, find a bottle of common iodine, like for cuts and scrapes, and paint a one inch square on your skin. I use the forearm, where it won’t rub against clothing or the body. Time how long it takes to disappear ( get absorbed).
If it takes less than 24 hours, you need more iodine. (I will write about your water supply later on.)
I currently recomend a product called Iodoral, this combines the iodine and iodide forms in a moderate dose and a good price. Take two daily, until your repeated skin tests is negative. Then take one daily as a regular practice, because if you were deficient before you will be again.
